Mission
To empower the people of Ketambe to care for their forest home; supporting the growth of ecotourism, in harmony with local agroforestry development, to allow a greater number of families and wildlife species to benefit from a healthy productive forest.
FOREST TOURISM MANAGEMENT
CAMPING AREA PRESERVATION
- Improve waste management and sustainability of tourism areas
- The construction of semi permanent tents to minimise the amount of single use plastic, and decrease the number of small trees being cut in the jungle
- Trekking route management and campsite allocations, managing the numbers and locations of camps in the designated tourism areas.
KETAMBE TREKKING EXPANSION
- Support for guide units to establish new trails and camping areas, to expand the tourism potential of the Ketambe forest, to allow a sustainable increase in tourist numbers
- Create detailed maps of new treks, with GPS coordinates, designated campsites, water sources, and landscape features.
LWP KETAMBE GUIDES
KETAMBE GUIDE EDUCATION
- An association to guarantee the basic knowledge and skills of guides in Ketambe
- Standardising the information given to tourists during pre-trek briefings, so there is no miscommunication or conflicting information, ensuring tourists have all the required equipment and personal safety equipment
- Give basic ecology and biology information, basic english lessons, and tourist management training, trekking route maintenance, campsite allocations and best practice methods for interaction with wildlife.
MONITORING AND DATA COLLECTION
- Collect gps and photographic data around park boundaries and areas high tourism value; i.e. Campsite 1 and Hot Springs
- Establish a forest boundary committee to halt further deforestation in National Park and around tourism areas in the forest
- Work with local land holders whose ancestral land overlaps with the national park and areas of high tourism value, create a system where they benefit from keeping the forest; i.e. employment to carry out data collection and protect park boundaries, agricultural support to increase the profitability of their already established gardens, create more tours of farmland run by the farmers so they can get more economic benefits from the tourism industry.
AGROFORESTRY PROJECT
BAIK BUAH
- Help local farmers manage their land to reduce habitat loss, decrease erosion, and increase the productivity of their land. Choosing plants to stabilize the water table, improve soil, and create a more diverse agro-forestry landscape and increase high value fruit yields
- Through the NGO, funding the purchase of high value Indonesian fruit trees for local farmers; i.e. already established durian trees that only take a couple of years to fruit, grafted mangosteens and mango tree that are ready to fruit, etc; helping with soil preservation, water table stabilisation, and increasing income for farmers.
- Collect data, drone images and create GPS marked maps of forest boundaries.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
- Establish a volunteer program for teachers, researchers and skilled workers to donate their time and expertise to Ketambe
- Encourage university students to do their thesis and PhD in Ketambe
- Create a framework so volunteers can learn local knowledge from the elders of Ketambe; volunteers becoming involved with creating products for locals to sell, and learning about the culture, lifestyle, diet and way of life of the Ketambe village
- Further projects focussed on school improvement, english tuition, waste management and recycling project, socialisation, reforestation, etc.
THE NEXT GENERATION
Jungle School
- Establish an education program that teaches the syllabus for junior school students based in the forest
- Conservation lessons, jungle excursions, ecology lessons, conservation in Islam, the importance of the ecosystems and the animals roles within it, water table education, the role of forests in a healthy landscape, endangered species, monoculture Vs agroforestry, etc.
WILDLIFE TRANSIT CENTRE
- Create a facility to allow rescued wildlife to be treated by a vet in a timely manner
- Facilitating the capture, treatment and release of wildlife in Ketambe and surrounding are
- All activities will be in partnership with the National Park Authority TNGL, and wildlife management department BKSDA
- Vet clinic for first response treatment, and adjoining enclosures for observation and ongoing treatment
- Releases performed in conjunction with BKSDA
- Programs for engagement and training of local staff focussed on wildlife crime education, signage, and encouraging community support so they can protect their forest and wildlife
PROMOTION AND LOCAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
International promotion of Ketambe as a tourist and research destination
- Social media advertising
- Corporate sponsorship
- Tourism expos and wildlife conservation conferences
- Promotion to universities to bring more researchers to Ketambe, i.e. PhD students doing their research projects in Ketambe, and projects with museums and other research bodies
HOMESTAY PROGRAM
- Support local families to host volunteers, help them build a private room so they can have volunteers stay with them in a homestay scenario
KETAMBE BUSINESS COLLECTIVE
- Support for eco-tourism and conservation based businesses
- Collective created which facilitates communication between guest house owners, supporting sustainable pricing structures
- A rolling fund for cafes, souvenir shops, local produce shops, local art galleries.
