With a 5-6 day booking trek, we can venture to various ecological hotspots in the jungle. This could be to Danau Marpunge, a large lake in the highlands of the Leuser ecosystem, which provides a source of drinking water for hundreds of species that roam the forest floor… If you camp for a couple of nights by the lake, who knows what animals you may see come down to quench their thirst; it could be a clouded leopard, mouse deer or a dhole!
With a 6-7 day booking, a more advanced trek to the crucial wildlife corridor of Capi Mountain is possible, which is a volcanic plateau around 1,500m above sea level. The footprints in the mineral rich white muds here reveal the diversity of life in the Leuser, with a huge array of rainforest mammals seeking out the vital salt licks that are found in this area. This region is also a crucial corridor for the critically endangered sumatran elephant, so if you are lucky, you may cross paths with one of the remaining herds that roam through this ancient forest.
